Respiratory Testing / Treatment

Performing breathing tests to measure how well your lungs work is important to clarify the diagnosis of asthma and evaluate chronic cough or other related symptoms. At San Tan Allergy and Asthma and Arcadia Allergy and Asthma, we can offer several types of breathing tests on site.

  • Spirometry Test- During this test, you take a deep breath and blow into a sensor to measure the amount of air your lungs can hold and the speed of the air you inhale or exhale. This test helps to diagnose asthma severity and measures how well treatment is working. This test can also suggest other airway conditions.
  • Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT)– evaluates additional measurements such as lung volume, capacity, rates of flow, and gas exchange. This information can help diagnose asthma and direct the treatment of certain lung disorders.
  • FENO (Exhaled Nitric Oxide) Test- This test is a way to determine how much lung inflammation is present. This is important because sometimes you may feel your breathing is fine, but when you measure your exhaled nitric oxide, it can reveal hidden inflammation. It can also help us track how well asthma is controlled over time and adjust therapy to fit your asthma best.

Biologic Therapy

Traditional asthma treatments may not lead to complete relief of symptoms if your asthma is severe and difficult to control. Biologic therapies are at the cutting edge of treatment because they have the potential to be more personalized – to be formulated to treat specific cells and/or inflammatory signals which lead to the inflammation that makes it so hard for some people to breathe. Biologic drugs have been shown to decrease the rate of asthma flare-ups, reduce need for frequent oral steroids, and improve quality of life.

There are currently several biologic drugs approved for use in treating severe uncontrolled asthma: Mepolizumab, Omalizumab, Benralizumab, and Dupilumab are the most commonly given. Some of these medications are also used to treat other allergy conditions of the skin and nose.

We can perform blood tests to determine which biologic therapy would be the most effective for your asthma. Depending on the biologic medication recommended, you may receive it as an injection every two to eight weeks. Many of the biologics can be taken by injection at home.

Your allergy providers here at San Tan Allergy and Asthma and Arcadia Allergy and Asthma are excited to help you determine which treatment is right for you and works with you to make sure the treatment is effective.

With proper treatment, you can minimize your asthma symptoms and enjoy a better quality of life, stay active, and do the activities you love!

Patient Testimonials

Staff is professional and always very friendly!

After allergy testing, Dr. Shimamoto explained the process and options of allergy injections and answered all my questions. I follow up with Heidi, who is also great! As of now, I’m still doing weekly injections and it’s been easy to get desired appointment day and times. I am happy that I chose San Tan Allergy!”

Watch out for telemedicine appointments. Make sure you have pre-screened for them. Worked with Jackie over the phone. She is fantastic–super patient and professional. Had exam and skin tests ordered by Dr. Shimamoto. He’s happy and efficient. Great practice, just need to be patient with all the delays and possible miscommunications due to all the pandemic-imposed restrictions.”

Dr. Jain is AMAZING and I would recommend him to anyone who needs a dr for allergies (environmental and food) and asthma. He is great with kids. My two year old has been seeing him for over a year for various allergies and asthma and the office staff is great with pediatrics. I highly recommend.”
